Prior to having the Bariatric Surgery patients are required to have a Bariatric Psychological Evaluation. So what is this evaluation and why is it so important? The patient will have to locate a Mental Health professional such as a Licensed Psychologist, Psychiatrist, or Licensed Professional Counselor to complete the Assessment. The assessor does not dictate whether you are approved for the surgery but it is taken into consideration with all of the information gathered. At that time you are also being assessed for any mental health or eating disorders. This assessment gathers information in areas such as your family support, substance use, social activities, employment, and past and current mental health. You may also be required to take some of the various Eating disorder, Depression, and Anxiety scales that help with the assessment. As you prepare for your upcoming journey don’t be afraid to ask questions about the requirements and what to expect.
